About Ken...
I, Kenneth Immanuel Lechleitner, am a married man with five children. I am an Aboriginal person from the Alice Springs Region.
My mother is from Hermannsburg Mission were Aranda is the language spoken.
My father is Anmatjere man from the Mt Allan region were Anmatjere is spoken.
The four languages that I speak fluently are Aranda, Anmatjere, Warlpiri and English.
My cultural understanding of Aboriginal people within this local region is very close to my heart and I participate in maintaining our Aboriginal culture. When on recreational leave I participate in traditional cultural ceremonies and I feel that I am very much a part of what is happening on issues surrounding Aboriginal people.
I had a strong western education having completed my education at Immanuel College in 1985. Since leaving school I have held a number of positions building community structures in Central Australia that recognise the importance of the community being able to make decisions and work together across any racial and ethnic divisions.
I know that my cross-cultural understandings allows me to stand firmly with one foot in each society, Aboriginal and mainstream.
I want to be a part of the process of change that endeavours to improve representation and participation of Aboriginal people who are currently the most marginalised people in Australia. This will mean more Aboriginal people participating in mainstream learning and workplaces in ways that they become independent away from the poverty of welfare dependence and for improved relationships between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people, Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal beliefs and practices. I have seen how these relationships can be improved in the sporting arena and my experiences as both an Aboriginal sportsman and sports administrator within the Alice Springs and NT community demonstrate my ability to provide leadership at the community level.
I have also contributed to policy development and implementation aimed at addressing many of the social issues facing the Alice Springs and Territory communities. Many of these issues relate to alcohol and substance abuse, housing, family and youth issues. These issues can be found in all of the communities in the Lingiari electorate and impact on all voters to some degree. Neither of the major parties have been effective in addressing these challenges in government or opposition. The First Nations Political Party aims to bring the resources and support back to communities so that together the people of Lingiari come up with solutions to real problems on the ground.
As the representative of the people of Lingiari I will be acting to bring people together at the community level to address the issues that challenge us as a community.
